Preventing stray animal overpopulation in Hungary

Hungary is home to more than 500,000 stray dogs and an estimated 3 million stray cats. While hundreds of dedicated animal welfare organisations work tirelessly to rescue and rehome them, they can only reach a fraction of the animals in need. Shelters operate well beyond capacity, adoptions have stagnated, and every new litter puts even greater pressure on an already overwhelmed animal welfare system.

At Hangya Közösség (Ant Community Foundation), we believe that animal welfare begins long before an animal arrives at a shelter. Lasting change starts with prevention.

Founded in 2010, Hangya Közösség has grown into one of Hungary’s leading umbrella organisations supporting animal welfare groups nationwide. Today we work with more than 250 partner organisations, providing material donations, professional support, volunteer coordination and nationwide fundraising campaigns.

Tackling the root cause

Over the years, we recognised that shelter capacity alone cannot solve the crisis. No matter how many animals are rescued, shelters cannot keep up if unwanted litters continue to be born. The root cause is uncontrolled breeding and pet overpopulation.

That is why prevention has become the heart of our work.

Through nationwide sterilisation programmes, public education campaigns and close cooperation with veterinarians, municipalities and animal welfare organisations, we work to reduce the number of unwanted litters before animals end up abandoned or in shelters. Since launching our prevention programmes, thousands of dogs and cats have been sterilised through coordinated, cost-effective initiatives.

What we do

Our work combines immediate support with long-term solutions:

  • Supporting animal shelters and rescue organisations across Hungary
  • Organising nationwide food and supply donation campaigns
  • Coordinating volunteers and community initiatives
  • Funding and managing large-scale sterilisation programmes
  • Promoting responsible pet ownership through education
  • Building partnerships between NGOs, veterinarians, municipalities and businesses

Creating impact together

Animal overpopulation is not only an animal welfare issue – it is a social challenge that requires cooperation.

We believe that sustainable change happens when citizens, animal welfare organisations, veterinarians, local governments and responsible companies work towards the same goal.

Every partnership, donation and shared initiative helps prevent suffering before it begins.

Together, we can build a future where every cat and dog has the chance to live a safe, cared-for life.

Partner with us. Change lives.
